So by the time I edited, cropped, saved and took my still photos into IMOVIE most of yesterday afternoon was finished.
I think having a movie camera would have made it easier. I ended up applying the Ken Burns effect to the photos to make it more like a movie. That can make your work a little seasick after awhile so I tried to be minimal with the bells and whistles. I don't think this would be impossible for middle school students, but it would be a challenge. It would probably involve a class or group effort rather than individuals and some time applied outside of class.
The biggest timewaster for me was remembering where the free audio clips are online. Vaughn came to my rescue. Finding something appropriate was a challenge. Again, I think of projects I've done where students eat up class time fiddling with fonts and colors and applying actions to Powerpoints. You would have to put some real brakes on all that to get kids to complete a small film project. I finally embedded by video last night at 9 or 10. So, while this is worthwhile, it is not something I would do a lot in the classroom. (at least with middle schoolers) It is totally doable with older students.
